Product description Two runaways.... a tiny submersible.... a place no man has gone before....
Ashton Miller isn't the smartest, bravest, most adventurous 14-year old you'd ever meet, but he is the only person on the planet who's learned to telepathically communicate as clearly as if he's on the phone…only he doesn't do this with another human being. Ashton telepathically communicates with a mythical (but very real) creature from the deep sea. Not that long ago he was just a regular kid, a bit of a loner, and his sister was his best friend. Then the pair were saved from drowning in the ocean by, well, sort of a mermaid, but not—at least not in the image of fables and myth. That's when the whole telepathy thing began. Now he's on a mission to save his newfound sea friend from an environmental disaster and some very nasty animal hunters who are on her trail.
How the world finds out, how he acquires a deep-sea submersible, how the CIA and navy get involved, how he finds allies that believe in him and enemies who wish to destroy him, well, that's his story….oh, about not being the smartest, bravest, most adventurous…that was the Ashton before….
Young Adult Literature with environmental and spiritual themes.

ABNA Publishers Weekly Reviewer
Highly intelligent sea beings are real and living in our (underwater) backyard in this suspense-driven and skillfully written epic fantasy novel about a 14-year-old boy who finds he can communicate telepathically with a mermaid-like creature. After being saved from certain death by a mysterious glowing hand when his boat is nearly swallowed by a storm near an Oregon cave, Ashton finds himself possessed by strange sounds that lead him and his sister Autumn, 12, to meet Ko, an amphibious deep-sea creature who wants to enlighten them about life, specifically the importance of awareness and consciousness of a larger power: ("Ko nodded, then she smiled. 'Trust your desire...picture it...feel...see!'") To visit her people, the pair attempt to secure a sea-worthy submersible from an unexpected source for the journey. But it's not that easy: Driven by visions of profits and fame, various sinister characters (including government officials and religious zealots) conspire to stop Ashton and Autumn in all their pursuits and exploit the sea creatures for their own political and financial purposes. Technical nautical jargon and drawn-out descriptions of sea challenge, the book's sheer length threatens to sink this story under its own weight, and its themes of religious tolerance and political harmony might be lost on a young audience. Even so, the constant brimming excitement about the ocean and its inhabitants and its progressive, inspirational tone make this book an energy-driven thrill ride that harbors a timely message of unity and compassion.
